Introduction
St Stephen's International School (Khao
Yai) invites you and your students
to come and explore the natural beauty
and wonders of Khao Yai National Park
and the fascinating history and traditions
of E-Sarn.
We can run, or assist you to run a
variety of educational and adventurous
trips for students of all ages.
We have considerable experience in
running educational field trips for
our own students and we would like
to offer you and your students the
same opportunity. The aim of an educational
field trip is for students to learn
about a subject through direct experience
and their own investigations. As they
move up the grades, the student is
more involved in developing their
own research project including deciding
on methods of research, equipment
needed and how to analyse their results.
Field trips often cover more than
one subject and it is an excellent
way to enable students to make the
links between subjects such as science,
geography, maths, English, history
and even sport. Field trips are also
an excellent way to enable students
to learn field research techniques
as well as bringing a subject to life.
If you are interested in curriculum
linked educational field trip, please
discuss you aims and needs with the
A.S.K. Education and Activities Coordinator.
If you wish we can provide worksheets
for you and advise on pre-visit educational
expectations, and offer ideas for
follow-up activities after you visit with us.
Possible curriculum links and field
trip ideas are indicated at the end
of each Educational Field Trip area.

Primary students studying about rainforests,
their wildlife and uses.
Middle school students could begin
basic biological survey techniques, for example
using transects, quadrats, pond dipping
and direct observation to compare
habitats and identify animals of all sizes.
Tourism issues and the reasons and
benefits of national parks is another
area that can be addressed.)
Rainforests

parts of the forest ecosystem and
interactions between people, the forest
and the National Park. This couse
can include assessing the effectiveness
of tourist management in Khao Yai,
or relationship between Park and villagers.
Curriculum Links
Biology/Ecology: use field research
techniques including quadrats, transects,
soil analysis, aquatic invertebrate
monitoring, use of keys and direct
observation to compare habitats, identify
and monitor wildlife and make inferences
about the relationships between the
flora and fauna of the forest.
Geography/Environmental Studies: use
a variety of techniques including
questionnaire, observation, pollution
studies and quadrats to assess the
human impact on Khao Yai. Come up
with ideas as to how the impact could

How does a waterfall form? How do
rivers change as they move from the
mountains towards the sea? What do
people use rivers for? What pollutes
a river? How can you tell if a river
is clean or dirty? What is the relationship
between the forest, the river and
the farmers near Khao Yai? Middle

to find out the answers to these and
other questions during a River Exploration
field trip wit A.S.K.
Curriculum
Links
Geography – How does a river change
as it flows from the mountains towards
thesea? Compare water flow, bed load,
size of rocks, channel width, bank
size and river features to find out.
Students will use maths to analyse
their results. Older students can
look at the physics of water flow
at different depths in the river.
Use chemical and biological monitoring
techniques to assess the quality of
water in the river. Questionnaires
may help to understand any causes
of pollution as well as finding out
what people use the water for locally.
Farms
– Big and Small
Pak Chong is a major fruit and dairy
region of Thailand. There are farms
of all sizes from the huge Chok Chai
dairy to small mixed fruit and dairy
farms. Why is this area so good for
farming? How do researchers develop
new types of crop? How can grapes
be grown here? Diversification versus
specialisation – which is the best
way to go? What impacts do the farms
have on the local environment and
economy? We will take geography students
to a variety of agricultural businesses
in the area so that they can make
their own assessments and evaluations
about farming in the Pak Chong area.
Curriculum
Links
Geography: use questionnaires and
direct observation to compare the
inputs, outputs and processes in different
sizes and types of farm. Use soil
testing techniques to look at the
relationship between soil composition
and quality and crops that will grow
in it.
