Year 7 Geography and Science Field Trip
On Wednesday 28 January Year 7 visited Khao Yai National Park with Mr Peter and Mr Prince to explore habitats, ecosystems and physical geography. In the morning students gathered data from the shrub and grass land surrounding the Nong Pak Chi Wildlife Observation Tower and made a sketch map of the view north from the tower. After lunch, in the company of mischievous monkeys, a tour of the Visitor Centre included a quiz about the exhibits on display, before heading over to the Sai Sorn reservoir to observe the water margins and aquatic life in the shallows. Students successfully constructed simple water filters using sand and stones but shoals of tiny fish eluded our nets and remained out of reach. A quick visit to the Lam Ta Khong camp site offered views of monkeys, birds and deer – one monkey seized a container of food from outside a tent while the deer basked quietly in the shade of the trees. On the return trip we stopped to take in the view at the 30km mark. The viewpoint faces north towards distant layered folded mountains, including deep valleys, plateaus and limestone cliffs, which were formed long before volcanic activity later led to some igneous rock formations. Hornbills could be seen gliding in the valley below.
